Moving large, breakable items
Some of the most fragile household items to move are mirrors, large framed pictures, and furniture with glass parts. In every case, the key to moving these items safely and without damage is to make sure they’re wrapped and packed properly.
You may want to consider hiring a professional moving service to pack your household, and enjoy convenient, cost-effective full service moving. If you’re planning to pack your belongings yourself, here are some tips for large, fragile glass items.
Mirrors and large picture frames:
The materials you’ll need to pack these are:
- Packing tape
- Wrapping paper/newspaper or bubble wrap
- Packing box or moving blankets
- Permanent marker
It’s best to find a moving box that is appropriately sized for the item—the box should be slightly larger than the item being moved. Start by wrapping the mirror or glass frame in several layers of paper or bubble wrap, covering the item completely, and fold the wrapping all the way around (as if wrapping a present).
Use sturdy packing tape to carefully wrap the paper completely, going “round and round” the package—imagine you’re wrapping a mummy! Label the glass side of the package with the marker.
Finally, place the wrapped item in the box and tape shut. You can also use moving blankets for the final layer of wrapping and tape the blankets closed. Mark the items as “FRAGILE” in large, noticeable letters, and load the package standing vertically (not horizontally) onto the truck between two items that aren’t likely to shift during transport.
Furniture with glass parts:
If your furniture contains glass, such as a glass inset tabletop or glass doors on a cabinet, always remove the glass component and package it separately from the rest of the furniture. Use the same procedure as described above for mirrors and picture frames to properly pack the glass parts, and label them both “FRAGILE” and according to which piece of furniture they belong to.
