Expert Moving Tips
From the Pros
We’ve moved over 50,000 families. Here is our best advice to make your relocation smooth, organized, and stress-free.
📦 The Golden Rule
Heavier items go in smaller boxes. Books should always be in small boxes. Light items like linens go in large boxes.
🏷️ Label Everything
Label the side of the box, not just the top. Write the destination room and “FRAGILE” if needed.
🍽️ Kitchen Packing
Pack plates vertically like records, not flat like pancakes. Use plenty of paper between each item.
🎒 Essentials Bag
Pack a suitcase as if you’re going on a trip: meds, chargers, toiletries, and a change of clothes for the first night.
🧊 Defrost Fridge
Empty and defrost your refrigerator at least 24 hours before the movers arrive to prevent leaks.
🏢 Building Rules
Check if your building requires a Certificate of Insurance (COI) or an elevator reservation. We need this info early!
📸 Cable Photos
Take a photo of the back of your TV and computer setup before unplugging. It makes setup 10x easier.
🐾 Pet Planning
Arrange for pets to stay with a friend or in a quiet room on moving day to keep them safe and calm.
🧊 Clear Pathways
Ensure walkways are clear of snow, ice, or debris. This speeds up the move and prevents accidents.
Common Moving Mistakes to Avoid
Waiting Until the Last Minute
Rushing leads to poor packing and broken items. Start packing non-essentials (books, seasonal decor) 3-4 weeks out.
Packing Hazardous Materials
Movers cannot transport flammables, paint, propane, or chemicals. Please dispose of these or move them in your personal vehicle.
Overloading Boxes
A box should not weigh more than 50 lbs. If it’s too heavy for you to lift, it might break or cause injury.
Forgetting to Label
Unlabeled boxes end up in the wrong rooms, doubling your work later. Color-coding stickers can be a huge time-saver.
